Here's a laptop desk I recently threw together from scrap 1/2" birch ply and an old 3" foam mattress pad. The desktop was cut with a jigsaw, shaped with a drum sander attachment on a standard drill, and then rounded over with a router. It was finished with Deft sanding sealer and three coats of lacquer (allowed to cure for a week). For the bottom, a fabric square was stapled over a piece of 1/4" mdf and the foam. The pillow assembly was affixed to underside of desk with a low VOC construction adhesive which was allow to cure overnight with pressure on top (three cans of paint).

Thom Cincotta Custom Renovation & Repair, LLC on Jan 13, 2013Sorry to add to your list, KMS! I hear ya on the unheated subterranean workspace. I have to bundle up and throw on a few space heaters to get anything done down there. Colorado's getting a rare arctic blast it seems.
