Try a chimney sweep maybe. Or a duster of some kind.

Why do you have soot on a new asphalt roof?? It's the summer... if you are lighting off your furnace and your furnace is poofing out that much soot, I would have the furnace looked at. If it is from the winter's use and your furnace is in good shape, I would try washing the area with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) and a brush. Are you positive it isn't something wrong with the new asphalt roof?

@Christina McMullen Thanks uou. How much of TSP in warm or cold water do you suggest.

I love TSP on anything dirty! I restore and re-purpose many old things and always give them a wash with it. I don't really follow instructions... just warm water and say a 1/4 per gallon? And you don't have to glove and mask up... it is a powerful cleaner but it has never burned me.

let me know how it works. my husband uses it in the barn frequently to remove the greasy spots the horses leave when they "rub" on the sides of their stalls. If it can cut through that.... it might help. I use it to clean all messes that regular household products can't clean.
