Wine Bottle Hanging Basket

I bought a hanging metal wine bottle holder and turned it into a planter by filling the bottles with plants.
I used a bottle cutter to cut off the bottoms of the wine bottles. There were a few casualties, but I managed to get what I needed. The metal holds 10 bottles. I cut 5 and left 5 in tact. The bottle cutter will score the bottle, then you dunk it in boiling water, then ice water to get the bottom to break away.
I gave it a good sanding so the edges wouldn't be sharp. Then, I added window screen to the bottles to hold the dirt but allow water to drain. I did this by cutting the screen into a circle, forming it into a cone shape, and pushing it down into the bottle as far as it would go.
Then, I filled the cut bottles with dirt and petunias.
It was the perfect way to recycle wine bottles!

Carole on Dec 17, 2015I would use it indoors to put cut flowers in and sit the bottles a little higher in the rack. Use wine bottles with twist off lids which are very commonplace nowadays and leave the lids on to hold the water for the flowers. Would be very interested to hear how the plants last. Every time I tried planting anything in small containers they dry out too quick and the plants perished.
