Making this wagon back into a headboard

I am looking for a way to paint this piece to use it as a headboard. I am hoping to keep the character in the wood. Any thoughts or examples of paints or finishes to use???

I love it the way it is. So I agree with Glenda D, polyurathane to retain the beauty of the finish.

Agree with the other girls. This is gorgeous as is! If you are looking for a different color than the red then just do over the red with a dark gel stain or another color. If you use color to cover the color use a home made chalk paint as it will give you back the matt finish. Don't paint it on just well like feather it on. Matt Poly would be perfect! Is this for a twin bed or what?

I agree with the others, I would sand it lightly to bring fresher color out and then seal it with polyurathhane.

    Don't paint it.

I didn't make it, but I stained and painted it. A brand new college student moved out and is now living in a apartment and she and her minister made it, she showed me a picture of how she wanted it. We used trail and error this was new wood. So I stained it in walnut. I used a drag brush and dragged old white acrossed it. It was fast and easy. The staining took time. She let it dry over night and I painted it the next day.

@Brianna Orians if you are looking to brighten things up, stain comes in a number of colours. You could stain it - even using a few colours and still maintain the colour that is there already. Follow with poly to seal it.
