Fred Mayers on May 17, 2015Problem is you said food grade and waterproof. As b.enne said mineral oil or tung oil will make it food grade. But they do not do a great job of waterproofing. Have area for chopping food that away from water. You can use Spar Vanish in those areas.Helpful Reply

Chic Geek House on May 18, 2015Howard Butcher Block Conditioner - I use this stuff on my kitchen's butcher block countertops. It's a combination of bee's wax and mineral oil. Totally food safe, and if you apply it with the right frequency (once a month), water beads up and wipes right off it. The first few weeks you have the countertops, you want to apply 2-3 times (maybe once a week) so the wood gets good and moisturized/conditioned. After that, once a month does just fine. Just wipe on with a rag, leave for 8 hours, and wipe off the excess. Dee on May 18, 2015I installed butcher block countertops this year. I researched a lot of products. Howard is a great product, but I made my own-beeswax and mineral oil. I just grated the wax into oil and melted until it was a nice consistency (it will thicken a bit as it cools). The mineral oil penetrate, and the wax gives it a nice waterproof finish. I apply at night (one a month or so) and buff it off in the morning.Helpful Reply
