Power, Alaska style!

Hi, Mark!
I am moving from sunny California to the wilds of Alaska. There is a wonderful property which I have been eyeballing for the last 6 months, while waiting to sell my property. Now that that is near, I have done further research, and discovered that the property I've been watching had it's generator stolen, and is not on the grid--at all! I am, however, not yet deterred. I'm looking into putting in a generator to start, and then--cumulatively--adding wind and solar power. Have you any idea where I can look to find prices & ideas? It's only needed for the main house at this time. Thanks!

  • Are you only running off a generator or is there some sort of battery bank there? Tesla just introduced a new battery bank system which might be worth checking out (still need an inverter for it). Got a river running nearby - hydro could also be an option & yes solar does work up there, the catch is the limited amount during the winter - for a look at options, plus links for sizing appropriately - http://thehtrc.com/2011/going-off-grid-21st-century-5-options-for-power My first thought when thinking of off the grid solar is Northern Arizona Wind & Solar in Flagstaff as they install & supply probably the most types of off the grid systems around. Next is Run on Solar which as I recall is based in Cali

Have you checked out Off Grid Wilderness Living on facebook yet? There's over 15,000 people on there and could get you some pretty good ideas on that! We have 14 acres off grid in MO:)
