Child's bench

Shell Wilson on May 19, 2015sketch out a template of the side/back pieces, try to get your measurements close - the bench width looks to be about 2 feet/24" and guesstimate for the side depth would anywhere from 7-9" (the bench board should be just under 3" deep and 24" wide and 1" thick; each 1/2 circle area could be traced using paint can, coffee can and cut out with jig saw - I would stack and clamp the two base side/back pieces together and attempt to cut simultaneously - (depends on your saw blade). Bench boards could come from a base board of 12 foot or just over for oops moments - as a beginner always buy extra and plan to screw up - laugh it off and move on, sometimes screws up are the best part! Sorry sidetracked - I suggest cutting each bench board to a length of 26-28" - cut all 6 and lay them flat (making a box - with all boards going in same direction. Trace from template or sketch the slight curving of each bench board. Sand well for little fingers, hands and legs. Clamp your pieces together and mark where you want your screws - might be beneficial to pre-drill the anchor holes in the side/back panels - drill bit should be 1-2 sizes smaller than your screws - use screws, not nails. Also, recommend adding a bit of wood glue to each screw hole for stability and outdoor endurance, countersink your screws, sand, sand and sand some more - wash off with wet rag, allow to dry, check your wood grain for the desired softness/smoothness - when happy, PAINT, PAINT, DECORATE AND SEAL - recommend 2-3 coats of good sealer for any outdoor use. Judy Capone Mantell on May 22, 2015I agree with making a template with either parchment paper or even newspaper laid on the side of the bench and simply traced with a felt tip marker. A dinner plate or saucer, depending on the size of the cutouts would give you an easy pattern for a smooth cutout. If you cut it out of a thick plywood, you could probably make the slats longer if you wished. I would both glue and screw it together. Fun easy project.
