1920s Antique Desk

Cheryl @ Artzzle on May 18, 2015Try to find a well known dealer/appraiser (who won't low ball a price and then offer to buy it for less). You'll want to learn if it's all one, original piece. Many times parts are taken from different other pieces and put together and passed as original (this is called a "married" piece and they can be very convincing). The chances for that here, would be a different top added later. It's a beautiful desk. Look for identifiers on bottoms or inside of drawers. Notice if woods are different colors, textures or grades; are stain colors lighter inside the drawers or on the top. Looks old enough to be dove-tailed. Those can be indications as well. Good luck.Helpful Reply

Allie on May 18, 2015It looks like Duncan Phyfe style. Usually you can check on the drawer side or back of piece for the manufacture. Good luckHelpful Reply

Rachel Shoemaker on May 19, 2015It's beautiful! I wouldn't repurpose that. So many people on these DIY boards destroy antiques that are just fine. The worst thing to come along for antiques are these boards such as hometalk. Pinterest and so forth :(Helpful Reply

Eileen on May 19, 2015Hi Tami, check out Duncan Phyfe first, I saw some very similar on ebay and you may have a valuable piece, not to mention absolutely beautiful! I wouldn't change a thing (but that's me lol) Good luck and enjoy!Helpful Reply

Bethany on May 19, 2015I have been dealing antiques for 20 years and have never seen a drop leaf desk like this one. Do not paint, refinish, or strip this until you get a good appraisal.Helpful Reply

Melinda Edwards on May 19, 2015Can you show us a picture of the cleaned up desk? I hope you don't paint. Some items need paint desperately, some are more beautiful in the original/natural state when cleaned up well.Helpful Reply

Sue on May 24, 2015Don't clean it up until you get an appraisal, sometimes you can do something to that ruins the value!Helpful Reply
