Ideas for projects using semi-precious stones

One of my favorite places to visit is our local 'Scratch Patch' where it is possible to get the most beautiful semi-precious stones at a very reasonable price.
I have accumulated a box fill, and would love some creative ideas on what to do with them.
The quantity I have is about half a yard square.
A selection of the stones.
You sit in among the stones to make your selection. Its great fun for children and adults alike!

Here is a simple thing and it can be quite beautiful, you can mount them onto a framed piece of wood in almost anysize, I did this with seashells for above a door I polyed them but you don't have to do that, and then you can see and touch the stones whenever you want. I will take a picture and post it so you can see what I mean.

@Lee Cunningham Green That is a great idea, I love the way yours turned out. If I used the same idea, but used a shadow box frame, it could be a good solution, as I could use glass over it. Thanks so much for the inspiration, and for taking the photograph.

Drawer pulls. I am going to take sea glass and make drawer pulls for my daughter's dresser. Those are beautiful stones, btw

With stones like that, you have a jewelry maker's paradise!
    • Valerie Valerie on May 19, 2015
@Capernius I personally do not wear jewelry, but you are right. As it is possible to select each stone individually, it is a paradise for jewelry makers. Some of the items they make are beautiful, especially the necklaces. Thanks for the suggestion.

@Kitty The paperweight idea is fantastic! I study part-time, so spend hours at my desk. This way I would get to enjoy them all the time! Thanks for the suggestion.

You could also use some to put onto picture frames as well as a mirror. You could also perhaps, if you like the idea to display them in a coffee table, where there is glass on top and storage under the glass? Have a look at the table in the picture and you will see what I mean. Very Beautiful stones :) At least you've got plenty of ideas to go at :) Forgot to say that this table is from Ikea :)

@Valerie Your welcome. Yes I thought it was a nice idea and would look lovely with you using the stones and the shells diagonally opposite each other. Would like to see what you create - once you have designed something it would be nice for you to do a 're-post' and show us what you have done :)

Here is a really cool project you can try: http://goo.gl/RG0dUc It would look gorgeous with bright colored stones!
    • Valerie Valerie on May 21, 2015
@Deirdre Sullivan Hi Deirdre You are right, this is a great project. I would probably limit it to the rim only, and paint the bottom part of the pot, so as to make them go 'further'. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about a tray, like a snack tray with all sides/breakfast in bed tray, patio tray: line with your gems tight then get an apoxy kit "2 tubes you need to mix", from the craft store and pour over the stones till you have a level flat top. You could get an old tray and spray paint the tray first.

@India Em Artist Author I tried this at one stage. I glued stones to the bottom of a butler's tray, and then used a resin exopy to level it. The problem was that the stone sizes are all different, and even though I had tried to use relatively flat stones, the amount of resin needed was enormous. Eventually I had to give it up. It would work on a smaller scale. The beauty of the resin is that it really enhances the colors of the stones, almost like having them constantly under water and magnified.

I have a large heavy glass vase "clear" someone gave me and they glued those little gems all over it with slight spaces using E4000 glue and it is way cool and spiky!

@India Em Artist Author This is an excellent suggestion! Thanks for this, and the previous, suggestion!

If you had the time, a backsplash in your kitchen or bathroom would be really cool! Also, my sister will fill up glass bowls from the dollar store with seashells and they end up looking like very pretty decorations. You could do something like that.
