I did the same thing with pine cones but I have too many birds and they go through a jar of peanut way too fast. Great idea if you live in a city or town and only have a few birds visiting.

I'd love to, but the squirrels would get it before the birds do.

I agree with Rose E. I did this with pine cones and low-buget peanut butter and they came in droves...okay flocks. Good afternoon project to teach tots about birds.

only feed birds during the winter, they need to hunt their own food in the spring, summer and fall months, pine cones work great, use any cheap peanut butter

Great idea! I take apple slices, spread with peanut butter and roll in birdseed. When the birdies get down to the middle, they find a nice fruit treat.

Can you use something other than peanut butter? I would like to make this with my students, but we are a peanut - free school.

I guess you could also use the rolls from paper towels.

If you choose to make one, you better add cayenne pepper to the mix. If not, the squirrels will have a field day! I make my own suet cakes & always add cayenne pepper!

I make homemade suet and recycle my TP rolls by using them as a mold. Two of them will fit in a regular suet feeder and removing the cover is easy by simply untwisting it!

Rose E. My husband and I live right in the city of Portland, Maine and we went throught 185 lbs. of bird seed this winter. Plus we had Red Tail Hawks in our yard !! So much for not having very many birds in the city!!! LOL

Sherry, how about SOYNUT butter, it's peanut and tree nut free and has the same sticky texture as regular peanut butter. Can find it at the grocery store usually. My son has a nut allergy and that's what we use.

Sherry Pyle...... please be very careful and research the bird seed for peanut allergens. Since it's not 'people' food it does not need to be disclosed on the labeling.

I heard peanut butter gets stuck in their throats...has anyone else heard this? To Cookie in WVA. Feeding the birds year round encourages them to eat the bugs in your yard. When my feeders stay full, I have at least twenty birds pecking the ground (not by the feeder)

How do you keep the squirrels from taking them?

People aren't reading all the posts :-) If you add LOTS of cayenne pepper to your mix, the squirrels will stay away, but won't harm the birds. I make my own suet cakes with cheap, chunky peanut butter, raisins, oatmeal, etc. and the birds LOVE them! I can't imagine paper rolls holding up in wet weather either.

I have heard that using a product like crisco would work instead of PB. I have not tried it--I was afraid of the grease mess in my classroom. If you find a solution, please post

A treat like this is really just a winter feeder, ( the peanut butter, natural organic of course ) is used in such a small amount to make the seeds stick.

This treat will dissappear fast, the birds went crazy over it and with in a couple of hours it was picked clean.
