First thing -- hurrah for zip ties! You can fasten pretty much anything to anything else with zip ties. For outdoors, be sure to get the nylon ones as they last nearly forever. The bamboo/reed fencing Scott suggested will work only in a fairly dry climate. When I used it here in the rainy Pacific NW it lasted only one season. Rachel's idea of planting vines is great as long as you don't plant ivy; it gets so heavy over time that it will pull your fence down. Around here we often use clematis, which spreads rapidly and has attractive seed heads in the off-season. There are varieties for nearly all climates. But if it's just that the fence is ugly, and not that you need more privacy, you might consider spray-painting the fence either dark green or black. Either one, depending on what's behind the fence, will make it visually disappear. Be sure to use gloss paint, which weathers better than flat. Good luck!

They also make vinyl strips intended for this purpose that you weave in and out of the chain link vertically...but the ideas above that you got are great!

I would use a natural screen of plants to cover the area, but in the meantime while you are waiting for it to grow and fill in you could add some of that rattan or bamboo stuff to your fence as already mentioned by other Hometalkers here. It is cheap and easy to put up but won't last forever that is why I suggest a natural plant screen. Much prettier!

@Tina Anderson there are a few things you can do. Home supply stores sell bamboo fencing which is a nice disguise for frost fencing. You could also attach lattice to it, which could be painted in the colour of your choice. Then you could grow vines up it to further beautify it. I have creeping virginia along my fence and in the summer it is so thick you can't see the fence at all.

Thanks for great article. As far as your question is concerned, in my opinion you should put a creeping vines over your chain link fence that not only increase the look value but also hide from unsightly viewor paint your fence with magnificent mural can add an elegant touch to your backyard.Great work you have done.
