Double Matted Picture

I received this print (alright i had begged for it!) for Christmas 2013. I put off getting it framed until January 2015. I priced a double matted, plain jane frame at Michaels. $500. Ouch. Not in the budget. But this was supposed to be the focal point in the in-process living room.
This is what i came up with. I had a frame with glass the right size. But no backing for it. Time for hubby help.
Dear sweet hubby cut a 4'x8' piece of luan to size for the back. Perfect. With the remaining luan he cut a mat for the front of the frame. Not so perfect. He cut cut the hole just a smidge to big. Oops! But it was a perfect boo boo!
He cut a 2nd mat out of the square that came from the center of the 1st mat. Now i had a Double mat! Perfect again.
The next step was to cover the 1st matting. A little spray adhesive, provided by hubby, and some leather scraps from my stash... And then seed beads in mixed colors glued over the seams. Hubby thought the beads overkill. But i LOVE beads!
Now for the 2nd matting. A little more spray adhesive, a little bit of batting, and fabric scraps left from the roman shades i had just finished for the living room.
The end result... (Yeah, notice the glare. I havent done the shade for the all glass front door yet)

There are color variations in the leather scraps and some have stains/flaws in the leather. Not a problem. Still looks great. The only items i had to purchase were the luan and the batting. Everything else i had available and just taking up space. Much better than the $500 plain jane double matted frame i originally expected to have!
