Can you help me identify this rocking horse?

Hi Everyone,
I bought this horse at an estate sale. We loved the simplicity of it. We live in Maine and it came from a family farm. Much of the furniture was Shaker. I've tried to find out more but can't seem to find anything. It has marble eyes and the mouth is cut out. Any ideas about who made the horse or what year do you think it was made?
We are really just interested in learning more about it. Thank you all in advance.

Sorry, I have no idea but wanted to say it's wonderful. It looks old and well loved doesn't it. There were a lot of talented wood workers back then, it might have been made by someone's dad or grandpa and you will never know. Good luck though.

We have one that is similar without the marble eye (which I love by the way!). I believe there is a pattern for this little guy and it was probably just made with love by a family member or loved one for a child.

If it is made by an artisan, it should have a maker's mark in an area perhaps inside the leg or under one of the crosspieces.. I think it could have been made by a loved one and handed down.. Either way, it is beautiful work done with care...
  • My Dad made one 1968 I was 1yrs old and it was in the news paper Waterbury , CT Robert Longo , his own design from coloring book. :) It was white red and black. Not like this with screws in legs but almost same silo-wet.

I would bet the farm that this was hand made for some lucky child. My dad used to make things like this for me, back in the 40's and 50's. These were really popular. What a treasure you have found!! That would be really cute, painted chabby-chic.

I had something similar to this as a child that was made by my grandfather. However, I don't think this one is a horse but a uni-corn due to the point at the top of the head. If so, this pattern would be late 50's early 60's when unicorn's were very popular with little girls.

@Ann Edmondson I don't think that is a horn, i think it is supposed to be it's ear. It is beautiful. I wouldn't paint it. maybe some clear varnish to preserve the wear of it. :)

i have a horse like this. It was made from a picture in a Tole painting instruction book over 30 years ago. I believe the original was made for JoSonja Jensen who was (at the time) associated with a supplier in Redlands, Ca. I painted mine for my son when he was less than 2 years old...now 36. I could probably find the original book it was copied from if you really really want it.

Hello, I had this exact rocking horse as a child. I was born in November 1980 and received it from my grandmother on my first Christmas. It is identical, from the "horn" on top the head to the yellow marble eye. I am born and raised in Massachusetts so not too far from Maine.

I have one very similar to this. It was given to my son when he was about a year old. He is fifty now. It was handmade by a local craftsman.
