Mothballs. Keeps all kinds of critters out of you garden. Or you can plant marigolds interspersed throughout your flowerbeds. Both contain the same ingredient, ammonia. Marigolds are what ammonia and mothballs are made from. No animal, likes the smell of ammonia. They will not eat it but it stings their sinuses. It won't cause an permanent damage to the animal, but they will avoid it. They can smell it from many feet away and long after we can. You can plant marigold interspersed in a food garden and above and below grow animals will stay away. All parts of the marigold, stems, leaves, roots and flower all hold natural ammonia.

Go to your local home improvement store and get the plastic runners that have the little pointy nubs on the underside. Lay those with the nubs up and cats won't want to walk on it or use it as a litter stop. You can put alight mulch over it, but not too much. You'll need to have some openings around your plants though for water to get through.

I clip my rose stems (you know...the ones with large thornes) and place them in strategic spots.

Cut lemon, orange, lime peels into tiny pieces and mix in your topsoil. Cats don't like the smell of citrus.

Citrus peel works and so does a liberal dusting with pepper.

Lay chicken wire down (you can put your plants or seed through it). Cats will not walk on chicken wire. I had a hard time keeping neighborhood kitties from making my huge honeysuckle plant smell like urine. Chicken wire fixed it quickly and easily. And cheap and permanent.
