I need the border to hold back rock landscape with a brick or two high and around a artificial turf area.

Have you considered a soldier course - i.e. standing the bricks on end? The easiest way to do this is by dipping a trench for the bricks to sit in (at least 1/2 the brick buried) and then backfilled. I would try to line the bricks up with the top of the artificial turf & keep the stones down by about 1/2 to an inch. Two layers starts with a trench, mortar base, brick, mortar, brick - making sure you offset the two layers by half.
