Driftwood Hurricane Lamp Diy

Looking around for projects I could create using driftwood, I came upon a couple of really beautiful hurricane lamps. The top one, available from Houzz is a whopping $388!! Seriously? Now granted, that vase is 22 inches, I’m thinking, 18 inches for the vase and 4 inches for the sticky uppy driftwood. ..but, I have found you a vase at Michaels, 18 inches, for $24.99. (and you know Michaels always has a coupon) Anthropologie was a bit more reasonable at $39.95, which was the sale price. The original price was $78, but they don’t have it in stock anymore. So, unless you want to pay the $388, you will just have to make one yourself.
First stop was the local Goodwill to see if I could find any Hurricane Lamps for cheap. I lucked out with these 3 for $3 a piece. I already shared my shell hurricane lamp, so you know I have at least one more in the works.
First step, using the hurricane lamp as a template, with a jigsaw cut a wood base out of scrap wood and sand.
Gather up your driftwood. If you don't have any honest to goodness real driftwood that has floated on the currents and rounded the edges, aged sticks will do...though that doesn't sound quite as romantic.
Use finishing nails, nail the sticks to the base. Keep the glass in place to hold the shape while nailing but slide it up a couple of inches so you have no chance of breaking it.
