Merrie on May 29, 2015It should not be a problem to still lay down some mulch around your plants - your local garden centers would be able to help you as to what would do best for your soil conditions. You can also add compost around your plants and work it in by hand or a small trowel - just be careful not to damage the roots of your plants. I hope this is of some help to you.Helpful Reply

Julie @ Southern Wild Design on May 29, 2015Amb, I know that you have had lots of rain. I think it would be best to wait a bit until the ground dries out. If you work clay soil when it is wet, you can actually suffocate the plant roots because of compaction. You can then see what plants are going to make it through this very unusual weather you are having. It could be that you have to start over.Helpful Reply

Julie on May 30, 2015I ordered a huge amount of mulch from Home Depot. It was delivered by dump truck. It's very good at staying in place and retaining moisture. We've had heavy rains also (in Austin), and that big pile of mulch hasn't hardly budged during the multiple downpours. Once I placed the mulch on a muddy slope, the mud sliding ceased. This mulch happens to be a very finely ground mulch. I didn't know it would be as good as it is when I ordered it. So, I'm very happy with this mulch. I actually think that Home Depot contracted with a local dealer to supply the mulch. But, it doesn't matter. I'm happy with the quality.Helpful Reply
