I would like to paint my walls a shade of orange. Will the colors clash, and look bad?

If there is orange in it you are fine. It is like pulling colour out of a patterened rug or curtains.

As the saying goes: Good art doesn't match the sofa. If it's abstract especially, don't worry about it.

I agree with the previous posters. If the painting has orange in it then go for it.

Maybe just an accent wall? Be sure and take the painting with you when you select the orange so you can match as closely as possible to avoid clashing.

@Julie You are right about an accent wall if the colour is really bright, and she wants to match it exactly. Or she can do a toned down version of it and not have problems with clashing. I used to work in a clothing store years ago, when black or navy rayon skirts with colour were all the rage. They all had some kind of abstract pattern like brush strokes. Sometimes the customer would try to match one of the colours for a blouse and find it too bright or garish. We would recommend (as some of the designers did), to choose a slightly more muted shade of the colour in the pattern, with great success.
