Create early evening shade for deck

Linda
by Linda
The evening sun is so blasting hot on my deck that I cannot enjoy sitting outside in the early evening hours. I'd like to create a "curtain" that folds against the house during the day and can be swung out to create shade. I'm thinking of those wooden gate fasteners that swing open and shut, and I've purchased a canvas drop cloth. Now, how do I do this?

Build a frame. You can probably get by using 2x2 lumber. Use metal corner brackets to keep it square. Staple your drop cloth to it to hold it temporarily and then put 1x2 lumber over the drop cloth exactly where the 2x2 lumber is. Use screws to put the whole thing together, drill first and and countersink so the screws don't split the lumber. If the lumber is very fresh and still damp, you won't need to pre-drill. Make sure all of your lumber is straight before bringing it home, look down each side of it... you'll know if its not straight. Attach your hinges and have somebody help you hold it up while you attach it to your house.

I agree with Carolyn. You need to create shade right away. Are there trees or vines you can plant or is water an issue? You can also get one of those misting systems that drop the temperature about 30 degrees. They start about $30 up to thousands. I don't know about the building part, but if the drop cloth does not work very well then you can buy shade cloth by the yard or metre and make a shade from that. You can get it in different colours and density. It is designed specifically to reduce sun getting through but not all light. Check out one of the bigger chain stores. This will stand up better to be used outdoors than drop cloth canvas would. We have had some on our chain link fence now for about 8 months. It is tough stuff and water won't stain it or make it grow mould on it like it could on canvas drop cloth. Good luck with finding some construction instructions.

Misting systems, in the Southwest US, are used outdoors to cool the people who are in the area. It is a very fine mist of water mounted on awnings, etc. it makes the area much more comfortable...almost feels like AC

Didn't know you could purchase shadecloth. That's how I'm going go. I will probably do a triange (like the sailcloths you see for many $$). I can attach it to the house top and bottom and have an anchor hook for the 3rd corner out at the edge of the deck. I wouldn't want to use a mister because I usually sit out there and read or grade papers, etc. Thanks to all for the terrific responses!
