newest addition of welcome sign/bird house/chain held seat

I think this looks like pine or oak, not sure, but it's not sanded and I'm wondering if a waterproof light stain or just a clear varnish would do nicely?

Add vertical interest to a flower border with a funnel and a shovel or broom handle.
