HELP! Previous owners left dog smelly carpet!

We bought our house 4 months ago and I've cleaned the carpet in my master bedroom 3 times and have tried arm n hammer AND I've tried Fabreeze. Nothing is getting the smell of the previous owners dogs out of the carpet! I'm about to tear the carpet out. It's the only carpet on this level of the house. Thank goodness!

Going to be honest here. You probably wont ever get the smell out. It probably has gone to the padding below the actual carpeting. You are going to have to replace the carpeting or pick another type of flooring...... I know this first hand, as I just ripped out all the carpeting in my house and put in vinyl plank. The carpet smelled so bad from years of dogs......

The vinyl plank is awesome. It is 100% water proof and it looks like real wood. LOVE IT!!!

We had the same problem and had to take out the carpet and padding. It was on the main floor so we also washed down the concrete subfloor and put in hard flooring.

Mix 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide,1/4 cup of baking soda, and a tsp of dish soap. Check to make sure it doesn't bleach the carpet - try some on a small inconspicuous spot. If ok, soak the area. I have dogs and cats and it works wonders. It's also the best remedy for "skunked" dogs.

There are actually products on the market - the one I know of is called Smells and Stains - they are enzymes that digest the urine crystals and then evaporate. The problem is that they digest anything organic, so you can't use on wool or cotton carpets - only synthetic ones. http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Chemistry-Smells-Eliminator-24-Ounce/dp/B0050IC8MK I found out about this product after buying a very expensive set of bedding (including a duvet cover) and my Golden X jumped on my bed for comfort after cutting his paw - blood everywhere. So I put the new duvet cover and the top of the top sheet (the part you fold over) into the washer with the recommended amount of cleaner. The product was brand new on the market and didn't mention that you shouldn't use it on 100% cotton products - my brand new bedding had holes in it where I had directly applied the product. But I've used it very successfully on synthetics (including carpet with underlay).

I agree with Janel, the problem is probably residing in the padding beneath the carpet. If you get the carpet too saturated with cleaning products it may not dry thoroughly and depending on whats underneath, cement or wood, you could have a larger problem with floor integrity. I'd get rid of the carpet and padding and start fresh.

There us anither product called DooDoo VooDoo yiu can buy online at http://www.doodoovoodoo.com I have used it for years and having done cat rescue and had to clean a lot of areas, this works!! But you do have to address the padding. The directions for this product explain well.

try putting a bowl of charcoal in it will absorb oders

I would take the carpet out. Carpet contains tons of germs, not to mention dirt, mites, etc. Imagine covering your floor with fabric, regularly cleaning it the same way we do carpet. Get the picture? Replace with something else, stained concrete, tile, wood, etc. At least those can be cleaned.

We had the same issue. You can try a product called Natures Miracle that you can buy at Petco or other major chains. It come is large quantities and has a sprayer attached. Order a flashlight off Amazon to finds the urine stains in the carpet. They are cheap. Use it in the dark and find the specific stains. They will be easy to detect. Use the product and soak the spots. It is also organic enzymes that will eliminate the urine. Vacuum up after dry then check your spots again. Also, the flashlight is going to give you a good idea if you want to keep the carpet at all. You may see what you are dealing with and decide to pull the carpet up all together. My girlfriend also had the same issue. I gave her my flashlight and she pulled her carpet right away 😊. Good luck

The one sure way is to remove the carpeting and padding and seal the floors with oil based Kilz. Chances are the urine has soaked through the carpet and padding to the point nothing will correct the problem. Once the Kilz is dry you can recover the floor with whatever you want. No odor will come up through. Expensive but effective.

It doesn't smell like urine. They had 3 large dogs and the room just smells like dirty dogs. It's sounding like I'll be pulling up the carpet. That part of the house was built in 1900. I know it has the old wide wood plank floor. It is very uneven. You can feel joints thru the carpet n pad. Hopefully the wood is in descent enough shape I can paint the floors.

Gil Rob has the perfect answer...take it all out, use KILZ on the subfloor and go from there
    • Melinda Edwards Melinda Edwards on Jun 08, 2015
@Cindy Moore You are absolutely correct. Once the carpet and the pad have been saturated, not cleaned immediately, there is nothing more. Professional cleaners can do their best, might remove smell even, but stain is there forever if the carpet pad was soaked. I would rip it up (doing this now due to a 16 year old dog, in-laws couldn't take care of him, came to live with us), clean the concrete and use KILZ, or seal in some way, then redo floor. You cannot live with this and it will never come out. You are better off with tile, or wood, if you can. Cleaner in every way and no future worries.

A "black light" will help you find the pet stains.

I use one of the plug in's from bath and body works and the dry pet power that you vacumn up. It seems to do a pretty good job in concealing the odor. I've also washing my carpet several times.

Try white vinegar which deodorizers almost anything. #2Amazon has "anti icky-poo.This was developed for police and coroners and is quite phenomenal. Finally there is Stable fresh. It is an equestrian item for stables. Make it up in a spray bottle per instructions. You spray for 5 days to counteract the oder, then you can drop back to once a week.good luck.

I'm afraid the best thing you can do is rip it out. Most carpet cleanings only bring up the urine that has dried in the backing. It is called "wicking", and it is basically like rehydrating concentrated urine. That's why it smells so bad after a cleaning, and also why stains seem to magically reappear sometimes. (Ex-husband had a carpet cleaning business, which is how I know.)

We bought an investment house where the owners had let their pets do their business in the corners of rooms. Not only did we rip the carpet to remove the odor, but we also found that the urine had penetrated into the tactless (the strips that hold carpet). So we had to pull that up too. In some spots we had to replace the subfloor. It really depends how far down the urine/damage goes. Good luck.

Vinegar should do the trick but you need to ensure you soak the area right through and if there is underlay, that needs to be soaked right through too. And soaked beyond any obviously marked area. And then leave it to air dry. If that doesn't work then go for an enzymatic cleaning product. The enzymes destroy the organic matter which is causing the stink. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your input. It doesn't smell like urine it just smells like large dogs that need a bath. We used to have a blood hound and my grandfather raised and bred red bones. It smells like them... you know a hound.

Try hydrogen peroxide. That works also.
  • Jackie Gulick-Dunn Jackie Gulick-Dunn on Jul 15, 2015
we had that same problem smell. Like big dogs that need baths. If you just keep working it with products suggested it will eventually fade in time. We still barely notice ours on hot humid days
