What beautiful work you do Kathy! I've used a couple of different products but right now I like Annie Sloan. That line has "wax" products for aging and sealing. Good stuff! I think the color is not quite as "warm" as the one Kathy used. The Sloan wax delivers more of a vanilla bean brown I think.

If you decide to use dark wax you can more easily control the color you want if you apply clear wax first. Rub it in, burnish well, then apply your dark wax. If you get too carried away you can use some clear wax to pull off some color. I would advise using the same brand for both waxes as not all brands are compatible with each other and can cause real problems with your final finish. You can also use glaze to highlight the recesses, then apply several coats of a good topcoat. Polyvine and General Finishes offer water-based topcoats that don't yellow finishes.

I agree with MaryStLouis about the Annie Sloan dark wax. Definitely put one or even two coats of clear wax first. An Annie Sloan dealer told me to mix a tiny amount of dark wax into clear wax for the dark coat. I did that & it was still very intense. Just a precaution to proceed carefully with the dark wax. I use it, but very diluted with the clear wax. You might also try dark brown paint watered down very thin and rub it into your cabinets with a non-lint cloth. Maybe practice on a white painted board first using a few different techniques to see which method gives you the look you want. You can also dry brush a color onto the cabinets for an aged look & then wax. Hope it turns out just like you envision it.
