Ideas for re-roofing our canvas topped gazebo?

Gary Stenzel
by Gary Stenzel
We live in SW Florida, about 5 years ago we bought a really nice 10'x10' metal framed gazebo with a canvas top. With this Florida sun though the top only lasts about a year and a half max. The metal frame will probably last a good 20 more years if we paint it. I'm thinking about building a new top from luan plywood and 1"x1" framing. Gluing and screwing everything together on the ground then lifting it over and securing it with nylon Zip-Ties. I would have to coat the wood with a really good sun resistant finish. Was even thinking about epoxy resin. LOL.
Do any of you "Makers" out there have any ideas, tips, tricks, or advice?
Would love to hear all ideas even if you think it might be stupid, just go for it!
Thanks,
Gary

We live in south Florida as well. We use solar screen on top of our pergola and it has lasted a few years. Our pergola is made of wood so we were able to screw wood strips to hold the solar screen in place against the ocean breezes. We also had a pergola in Louisiana and did the same thing. This solar screen has been in place for 7 years and no problems that we know of since we recently sold the property.

We purchase painters canvas clothes from Home Depot for our pergola top. We have to replace about every 5 years but they are so inexpensive that it's no big deal. They also come in many sizes.

Connie, that is an option I have considered also. But I really want something at least semi-permanent. Looks like I just might do like I originally intended. I wonder if there are UV protectants that can be added to epoxy? A little "Googling" in my future today.

Or could you even coat the canvas with a light coat of polyurethane spray to protect it a little longer? I did this on an inexpensive canvas art print (because they fade so quickly) and it seems to be working.

That too is an option Rachel! Thanks!
