Wil the neighbors dog stop me planting in our garden?

I share a garden with my neighbors below. They have a dog which uses the garden for a toilet & turfs up the lawn when finished. I am wanting to grow veggies / herbs etc, but am thinking they will have to be raised else the dog will destroy them all. Grateful for any ideas other than pallets hung onto the walls, as the garden has no walls :)

Sprinkle your garden with Cheyenne pepper. One good wiff up his snout and he most likely won't return!

I put in fence sections like the ones in the photo below available at Lowes and Home Depot. They are 29" tall x 38" wide. Each panel costs about $18. You pound the sharp end of the post into the ground, put the rest of the post through loops on the ends of the fence sections and then put the bottom of the post into a hole on top of the buried sharp end. It's really easy to do. They even sell gates that match the fencing. The fence posts are $4.50 or so each. This would be too expensive for a one-year garden, but if you're going to be living there long-term they'd be great. AND, you can just pull the fence up and take it with you if you move. It's been successful at keeping my German Shepherd as well as my granddaughters' Chihuahuas out of my flower beds for about 5 years now, so I can give you a personal recommendation! Raised beds did nothing to keep my dog out...but mine are only raised about 3 feet...I guess it would depend on the size of the dog and the height of your bed. You might also consider planting things in window boxes or do a vertical garden...just Google it...there are lots of websites showing unique vertical gardens, many inexpensively. Good luck!

If the dog is male and you are making a raised garden bed, ensure it is high enough that he cannot cock his leg and sprinkle your vegies! Dogs also like to dig, so again the bed needs to be high enough that he cannot climb in and dig up your veg.

Dogs are deterred by the smell of either lemons or onions or moth balls.

Pet supply houses have cans of DOG AWAY that looks like a can of hair spray. You spray your garden perimeter with it & dogs avoid it. They also carry cans for cats as well. They can't STAND the smell of it. U will havta redo it after each rain but it works. GL

Just buy some cheap green fencing its about 3 ft. High..comes in lots of lengths and then get the green metal stakes and stake it every 4 ft. Then twistie the fence onto the stakes. Get supplies from home depot. I fenced in my garden like that from my dogs. Works great and is easy.

Then I would first knock on door and tell them ur dog is messing in your garden. I'd wait a day or so and see if that solved the problem, if not, then call animal control and tell them their dog is running loose and messing all over. They would first get a warning but if u have to keep calling animal control they will either start getting fined or if they see the dog running loose they will take it and hopefully find it a good home.

My dogs run through my garden all the time but they don't use the bathroom in it. Half the time they are laying in it and my strawberry patch. So far I haven't seen any damage and this is the 3 rd year of growing it here.

before you move the garden try a little caynne pepper sprinkled on your side of the garden, We did this to keep all kinds off dogs and critters out of the trash and garden. Now I have all my Gardens need in the old fashion square wash tubs there are on stands. I have 6 tubs I one set up for tomatoes 2 grape tomatoe plants can go in one tub, I grow potatoes in 2 tubs and cucumbers in to more And last is a few table onions and radishes, Best part is no tilling and very little weeding. I start my garden early if we get frost warning I just cover them with the lidsthe came with or a bath towel a closepin will keep it on My sister in law have even converted her old gas grill into a herb garden. she sanded it up a pit painted leaves the lid hanging open so she can plant the lid as well as the gutted out inside~ Hope some of this helps you get your garden back Good luck there is nothing finer than a home grown veggie

I suggest you speak with the neighbor. Perhaps take her a little rosemary plant to nurture.
