Can an old stained wood floor be easily painted?

Anneke Guns on Jun 11, 2015If it's really-really temporary I would say just give the floor a thourough cleaning and go for it, paint or whitewash as you like. I would sand it, because if you dont the paint might not take. Sanding isn't so bad, you rent a machine and pretend it's a grasmower, just walk slowly over your floor pushing the sander. Then hoover the floor, then clean with a weth cloth, ready to paint or whitwash.Helpful Reply

Linda Carbone Maehr on Jun 11, 2015I painted my old wood floor for a shabby chic look. First it was sanded and then painted. I didn't poly it but you can if you want. I don't get a lot of foot traffic in that room since its a guest room. I also stenciled the outer edge. It still looks good.Helpful Reply

Mehartgallery on Jun 11, 2015Sure you can.... watch this short video, (you will have to copy and paste the url... for some reason every time I upload a link it lands on "error",) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdFFNKmmXmM and see how I painted my stairs with a faux wood look! You could do the same thing on your floors! These stairs were AWFUL!!! Contractor grade, and now I LOVE them!Helpful Reply

Sweet Pea Studio on Jun 11, 2015Yes you can. First use original Kilz, not the latex Kilz. Now if you see lots of gaps between boards and do not like this look choose a dark shade of paint to 'hide' the gaps. If you love the look preserve it with polyurethane. Also, the original Kilz will smell so open windows when you apply this paint.Helpful Reply
