Kitchen island?

Deb Laber on Jun 11, 2015We have a small kitchen with an island. I love it as a gathering place for lots of different activities. I'd add an island to yours. Our cabinets are off white and our island is an old walnut dresser I converted with a granite top. Don't do wheels unless they lock.Helpful Reply

Heather McKinnon on Jun 11, 2015Our son made us a butchers block island. It has wheels on one side so it can be mobile if necessary. Very useful especially for taking hot food out of the oven. I would say - get a mobile one that you can lock the wheels if needed.Helpful Reply

Mandy Brown on Jun 12, 2015YES! You'll love it! Not only will you have more prep space, but it will give you more storage space as well. If the cabinets in the picture are the ones you're planning on using, then you could also put decorative towel bars on one side and use "S" hooks to hang utensils/hand towels and build shelves on the other for your cookbooks!Helpful Reply

Anneke Guns on Jun 12, 2015I have a semi-island, and it's really large. It has changed our way of living and especially receiving. Before I was always standing in the kitchen on my own, now I stand at one side of the island doing the cooking and stuff, family and friends gather in front of me having a drink before dinner.Helpful Reply

CK on Jun 12, 2015If you're thinking of an island I would definitely suggest it be on wheels. However have you considered just moving your table over closer to the counters and using that as an island-prep area/table eating area? Sometimes that works depending on how you use your kitchen space. I've seen people put in islands only to be disappointed by the now lack of space to move around it and between the table. Keep in mind how much space you need if you're planning to have island seating too. I had a client who wanted a really big island. She said it "fit" on the floor diagram but when I told her to figure space to move the chairs in and out, it didn't look quite so perfect ;-) One way to see if it'll actually fit is to tape out the size you want for your island and the chairs with masking tape on the floor. It'll give you an idea of just how much floor space is actually taken up, before you actually build. Then you'll be able to see if you need to make the island smaller, where to actually position it in your space, etc.Helpful Reply

Patricia Bechtel Winter on Jun 12, 2015Make sure there is enough space on every side of the island for traffic. You should have a minimum of 3' on each side - more if there are two cooks in the kitchen.Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Jun 14, 2015You first need to call your county to find out the building codes. This is important. I have an island and I love it. You have to build this to code if it is a permanent structure. good luckHelpful Reply
