Wanda Arganbright on Jun 12, 2015I think a narrow pergola over the brown door, coming off the cross piece of wood with a narrow deck for a porch, would look wonderful. You could then plant a flowering vine. Maybe a short decorative fence extending around the corner, with some pretty, showy flowers. A trellis anchored to the right hand wall under that small window with another flowering vine? Small potted plants on both sides of the white French door. Just some quick thoughts. I would also paint the brown door a nice, bright color.Helpful Reply

WindingCreekCreations on Jun 12, 2015planter box under the large window and a bright color on the door. I would add a cedar deck the length of that whole wall with a couple colorful chairs with some flower pots.Helpful Reply

Carol Burkhardt Rask on Jun 13, 2015I also like the idea of a flower box under the main window. Maybe swap out the gray door for white or a reddish. Possibly even two panels of lattice boards joined together to meet on the corner of the main front of the house. Maybe find a picture of the Eiffel Tower and cut your panels so half the tower is on one side of the corner of the house, and attach the other half on the other side to meet the first half. Then put a little bistro table with two chairs near the french doors towards the back. Paint or stain the flower box, the table and chairs, and the lattice all the same, a darker brown color. Make sure you paint or stain the lattice before you put it up. Put viney plants that hang down the wall out of the flower box and add a few colorful small plants as well. Don't forget a romantic light on the table made with a terra cotta planter container, some dirt to put in the solar tube light and finally glue a small lampshade on top. Good luck. I wish I could be there to see this come alive. One more thing, put some lacey curtain panels on the inside of of the french doors and tie them back. Have fun. Crazy ideas, but it all came to me as I write this. : )Helpful Reply

Mehartgallery on Jun 13, 2015Perennial border all along the property, beside the sidewalk... maybe lillies, they are so dependable. It helps to outline your property. As others have said, a verandah across the entire length of the house, shutters (at least on your largest window), and if you feel like painting the front door in a complimentary color: blue seems to be opposite on the color wheel.Helpful Reply

Bobbie joh on Jun 13, 2015Shutters. When I was staging houses, that was always a guaranteed way to create curb appeal. I think some simple homemade shutters, along with the ideas already mentioned to bring more color and structural appeal with flowers and vines and a little fence, and you will have an adorable cottage look going! good luck. Would love to see "after" photos!Helpful Reply

Judy on Jun 13, 2015Pavers creating a walkway to your door, and at the door a landing made of wood or pavers. To the to the side of the paver walkway some low ground cover, or arteca grass, or other plants to add interest. Nice containers with colorful plants to each side of the door looks very elegant. On the door or above the door something with the house number. Shutters would really look awesome BUT please not the louvre kind, Lowe's website had how to make board and batten kind - AWESOME! Love the idea of either a little wood fence, or low growing hedge creating a fence. Do post picture of what your solution was.Helpful Reply

Cynthia H on Jun 13, 2015I thought about plantings as soon as I saw the picture. If you're only a so-so gardener like me, shrubs are easily maintained if you don't let them take off on you. There are some pretty shrubs that also help with home security (prickly) that have some pretty colors. Is the street busy? Or is a side garden a practical thing?Helpful Reply

Gwen on Jun 13, 2015Look at the gorgeous trees as your backdrop! All your colors if not chipped paint nor peeling are fine. Is this the door guests use to enter your home? Where is parking? Or do people enter your home on the side where the garage is located? I'd say make where guests enter welcoming with the pavers from driveway to door. Use a premade arch at that point and use a noninvasive vine such as a rose or clematis to welcome guests. The plants on the side seem awkward and then on the side we see there are no plants at all. Take out these awkward plants or at least cut the red-leaf one to be three to four feet. I do not see how shutters will fit on side facing us. The windows are so close. But window boxes would make a huge statement! There are freestanding kinds that you stand under the window to avoid dealing with tampering with your house. Check Amazon or Wayfair or other sites even Gardeners Supply. I agree pavers going from street to the door would look nice. Square large ones with a bit of grass you can mow and weed eat around. I found resin pots in any color at Home Depot for under $20 in white or bright colors. There were many choices of large pots to flank this tall door. For ease of care, I put bushes in pots and found their easy care yet elevated position were more successful than annuals in huge containers. Gardeners supply catalog online sells self watering devices to add to a pot that holds a gallon of water, letting the plant wick from its roots. This runs about $20 but it helps with watering. If the bushes are rounder it creates interest. In my area we have a Nandina bush that changes color with the season and grows to about 3.5 feet. It rarely needs a trim. In the huge blank wall is where you could plant the short Italian cypress or similar narrow trees that do not tower like regular cypress. As suggested, create a seating area here. Use short plants around it and behind it to make it simple yet eye catching. I also agree that the property needs a barrier from the no curb nor sidewalk street. It would be a lot of work but to take out all the grass in the area next to the road. Set a plastic picket fence about two feet in from the street and use redwood buried as a barrier. In the area between fence and street alternate short bushes that are evergreen ( mini boxwood) with perennials with staggering bloom times or long summer bloom times. It will create a distance and a sense of privacy to your property. Also keep the garage door down at all times. Mark the street address clearly and place by door on a piece of wood. Use solar lighting for highlighting various areas. Maybe a walkway from the door we see to the sitting area. Pavers in a circular type shape. Then the rest of walkway to go to the other door. But from what I see I'm confused where is the legal address? It needs to be clearly displayed and the door areas well lit and highlighted with an archway and larger planted pots. Best to you!!Helpful Reply

Buster Evans on Jun 14, 2015Plants... Plants that bloom always add attractiveness (or at least I think so,,, Fresh paint on the trim just below the roofline would brighten it up some... The picture is a bit far away so I cant tell if there are steps to the doors or what is there on that side facing the camera... The one bush that is over the roof and leaning outward from the house could be trimmed back to a couple of feet below the roof which would give that side a more manicured look. The color isn't bad, if you wanted to add some flare to it you could bring in another complimentary color and sponge or rag paint it in to add some definition to the outside. It doesn't have to be drastic just a subtle hint of a different color added in places around om the walls In other words ad to the color Not repaint the whole exterior. It looks as if its stucco so depending on where you live you could add palms or yuccas to make it a southwestern look as well.. Hope this gives you some ideas at least..Helpful Reply

Fran McCarty on Jun 16, 2015Install matching doors. Flower boxes on the windows would give it that cottage look everyone adores. A sidewalk lined with carefree flowers such as Geraniums or Marigolds (If they are suitable for where you live) from the main door to the street invites visitors into your home. Small, non-spreading ornamental grass along the edge of the house. A new paint color for the exterior.Helpful Reply

Vicky on Jun 19, 2015Paint the doors a brighter, matching color. don't know what state you are in but you could put flowers or flowering bushes under the windows in the ground or in bright containers. if this is the side or back you could do a fence, even a partial fence will define the area.Helpful Reply
