Wood lath backsplash?

Hi! I'm trying to come up with an interesting/inexpensive back splash idea for my kitchen and I got the idea to use stained wood lath. My question is how to attach it to the drywall. Should I just screw it in or try some kind of adhesive? thanks!

  • I would not use adhesive. Do you have an air compressor? I would use brad nails. Adhesive would be a mess to remove in the future. If no air compressor, then drill a small pilot hole for brad nails. mark the counter with tape where the studs are and try to hit the studs when securing. good luck

I agree - I don't think glue would be a good idea. We just did a wood lath accent wall in our renovation project (it's on our Instagram account if you want to look at pics - @beginninginthemiddle ) and used a nail gun/finished nails to attach the pieces right to the drywall.

If you want to be able to change it in the future, you could make panels with the lath backed by 1/4 or 3/8 inch thick plywood, and mount the panels with screws. It would be easier to work on it and apply the finish that way, too.

If you decide to do this, be sure to coat the wood with poly or you'll get all kinds of food and water stains
