I have two very large floor to ceiling brown melamine cabinets and would like to make the door fronts white without painting. I have tried contact paper but although it would stick the size of the doors makes it impossible to get it on properly...help?

If you don't want to paint, I would suggest using mod lodge to adhere white wall paper to the doors.

Bead board wallpaper could work but you'd have to experiment with the adhesive. Of you could Mod Podge, as debi53 suggested, with old maps. The brown would show through tho. Why not paint?
  • Painting them would be easier than you think. I would paint them with Zinsser first. It's a primer that's great for wood, melamine etc.

If you don't want to paint because you want this as a temporary solution, how about fabric? I'm thinking of something with a little body that wouldn't be an application nightmare, and would come off easily. I've heard of people putting up fabric with starch, but I'm not sure how that work with a slick surface like melamine. I saw some great leather-look fabric in white at Joann's that might present a simpler (less messy!), solution. It's soft and supple, and does not look plastic-y or cheap. You wouldn't have to deal with glues or adhesives, just a few strategically placed decorative head upholstery nails. With a helper, you could get the doors covered without much trouble. (Disclaimer: I always think a project is not going to be much trouble. I'm often wrong.) If you want to/need to return the doors to their original condition, you'd only have to dab your little nail holes with spackle and touch them up with some brown craft paint. They'd be almost invisible on that stone swirly pattern.

@Kate The leather-look fabric is easy to work with. I covered bookcases with it using spray adhesive. Then brads. But the brads were for decorative purposes, as the spray adhesive works well. Later, chalk painted it because I moved the bookcases and needed them to be white. The texture looks neat. Good luck and happy decorating! susen

take the doors off, take them to your local millwork shop that makes plastic laminate counter tops and have them apply white laminate on the front; but if they were mine, I would paint them (and use 2 coats of zinser primer, 2 coats of paint and 3 coats of polyurethane) and will last longer than you want them white.

If you are having trouble applying adhesive backed vinyl to a large, smooth area you can lay the vinyl adhesive side up on a table and spray it completely with a fine mist of water. (I've found it best to have someone help you.) Then pick up the vinyl turn it over so the wet side can be placed against the melamine panel and apply firm, smooth pressure with a plastic squeegee pushing any air to the outside edges. If the adhesive is very aggressive it is best to add a couple drops of dishwashing liquid to your spray water.

Just paint them using Chalk paint. Trust me, no one will want them returned to their original state!
