Simple Steps to Your Easiest Garden Ever

Easy garden - really? Honest, you can have garden beds with flowers or vegetables that aren't taken over with weeds and don't require hours every week of maintenance if you take some simple steps before planning your garden. A little bit of planning goes a LONG way to having a garden you get to enjoy and not just work in!
Tips
In my article (find link to full blog post at the end) I list 9 things that we've done to minimize yard work so that we can spend more time harvesting and enjoying our spaces. Nine things? I might sound like a lot, but many of them don't take that much time (like planning for where you'll keep your hoses and equipment) or are kinda fun (like choosing what flowers you love or the food your family wants to eat). Here are a few of the steps:
Draw up a simple plan (can be as simple as you want, and doesn't need to be to scale, since it's just a guideline for you), start SMALL and then lay the foundation first of any paths, patios, or decking. Do this first and you won't have to dig up plants you stuck where ever!
This took us years to remember: plan for utility spaces and how YOU use things. We have to have a 100 ft. hose and all those expensive hose reels are a PAIN with that much hose. Our solution? Build a box! Seriously one of the best things we've ever done - and it was simple!
Choose to grow only what you love or will use in just a couple areas at first. You can always add more later, but if you start too big, you may be overwhelmed and throw in the towel by the end of the season.
Raised beds, raised beds! I love 'em - and not just for vegetables! They can be made from lots of different materials and make gardening easier in so many ways.
Paper and mulch - one of my favorite 'secrets' to weeding is to just cover the little ones up and let the lack of air and light kill them. Keeps new weeds down, too. Do it once and it's done for the entire season!
Not really a step at all - but don't forget to enjoy you beautiful, easy-to-maintain spaces!
