Denim Look Wall Painting

We wanted to create a jean / denim look on the chair rail portion of my sons bedroom walls.

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

Purchased a kit from home depot was the only option we considered. We had used a lady to do some custom painting in one of our children's rooms in another house but decided to do it oursleves.

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

Never had done this affect with paint before

* Cost Comments:

Paint kit - $50; $25 paint supplies

*My motivation to do this project:

Redecorate my son's room from the original paint form the home builder. We wanted to create a jean / denim look on the chair rail portion of my sons bedroom walls.

*Project Steps:

Purchased a kite that included the paint, the scoring tool and tape at home depot -

Painted the chair rail portion of the wall with white paint in sections

Let the white dry for a day

Applied the blue/faux/translaucent paint and then scored with provided tool - this creates the faded look of the jeans

The key was to tape off each to create a 1/2 inch section that was painted twice so it was darker - this became the "Seam" of the jeans

After the blue drys then go back to each seam area and use the provided tape that is very narrow with small holes. Measure and line up a strip from top to bottom. Paint the whole with the white paint and use have a jeans / denim seam.

Materials:

Paint kit - $0.00

My son is a big Texas Rangers and Mavericks fan (actually we all are). So we have a wall ...»
dedicated to Rangers with banner, Mavs (dirk fat heat) and soon to get a new championship banner (ya !!). So we did a two tone blue/grey with a red stripe. Added some shelving for trophies and new blue shade. My wife recovered the window topper and for about $100 and some labor a new look. And taught my son how to paint a little..

Bathroom Remodel

Bathroom Remodel

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

Considered painting over the wall paper but after research and some suggestions from friends felt the best approach was to remove old wallpaper. Did consider getting someone to do the project bud decided on DY project.

Also consider removing the mirror and having it cut down. We wanted to create additional wall space for cabinets but decided it was too dangerous of project to do ourselves and the cost to have it done was estimate at $200 which we decided against.

Also considered updating the fixtures, ect. But decided on replacing the shower head, and replaced all the toilet parts and reseated on floor. We also replace the light fixture with a smaller one to reduce heat from lights.

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

How to remove the wall paper was the first question. After research my wife decided to invest in small steamer to help steam off the old wall paper.

The 2nd main question was how to create textured wall. After looking at neighbor's similar project we decided to do it ourselves using texture paint purchased from home depot.

* Cost Comments:

Lots of small costs that added up to around $175. Texture paint $25; paint $30; painting tools $20;

*My motivation to do this project:

Remodeling children's Jack & Jill bacthroom. Wanted to replace old wall paper with texture and redecorate bathroom. Ended up replacing other bathroom parts and fixtures. The toilet had also developed a small leak in back of base of toilet.

*Project Steps:

Removed wall plates and fixtures from wall.

Remove old wall paper using steamer, scraper and lots of elbow grease

Sanded the rough spots with 220 sand paper and sanded wood trim

Purchased small handled roller extension poll since it was tight space to work

Primed all walls with Kilz Primer – applied using a roller

Applied texture paint and created textured wall using simple putty knife

Painted newly textured walls and ceiling with paint from Sherwin Williams – used eggshell

Removed old shower head and replace with new one

Removed old drain plug in tug shower and replaced with new one

(purchase a special tool to remove the old plug – heavy duty steel – well worth the $10)

Removed the old light fixture after turning off breaker

Installed new light fixture, reattached wall fixtures using moll bolts to secure tightly

Paint touchup

Completed took apart the toilet. A leak had developed at base of toilet.

Replaced the wax seal at base of toilet

Reseated toiled and bolted to tile floor

Replace all internal working parts of toiled including the main seals between tank and toilet; tested toilet working parts

Advice:

Do's

Use some sort of steamer to remove all wall paper

Invest new tools to apply texture – putty knife

Don'ts

Attempt to remove a mirror – best for professional

Materials:

Texture Paint - $0.00

Paint - $0.00

Painting tools - $0.00

Other tools - $0.00

light fixure - $0.00

shower head - $0.00

Added Covered Patio to Back of House

Added Covered Patio to Back of House

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

This was a contracted project from the beginning and we research several companies that build covered patios. We decided on the contractor that had done a project for our neighbor

* Cost Comments:

Labor and materials and lifetime warranty on workmanship

*My motivation to do this project:

The primary motivation was to provide some shade to the back of the home and reduce the heat radiation to the main living area. We also wanted to have a covered patio for parties and outside eating area.

Materials:

Cedar - $0.00

Replaced Outdoor Housing Lighting Fixtures

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

Adjusting the settings on the light censors – they much more sensitive than I thought they would be.

* Cost Comments:

  • Initial digging near flower bed and underneath driveway
  • new copper line
  • new line under driveway
  • new line; routed to nearest flower bed and down yard; under sidewalk to main city tie in
  • Tie into city main line; they had to come back; the pvc line is my sprinkler system which they forgot to tie back in; I showed this picture and they knew right where to dig to repair

Replaced Main Home Water Line with Copper Line

Main Water line Replaced from House; from house to tie in to main city water supply

*Options I considered for this project: ...»

1. Find the Leak, drill down into concrete, fix leak and patch up driveway

2. Burrow underneath driveway to find leak and repair

3. Replace Line

*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:

How to find the leak - need listening device from professional plumber

How to repair once leak was found - how much concrete to tear up and replace

Cost of Copper Line and whether that was good investment

* Cost Comments:

Plumber to Find Leak - $200

Copper Line Installed including digging - $1400

*My motivation to do this project:

A leak developed in main pvc pipe for water line of house. The water line was located underneath the driveway which made it a very complicated repair process

*Project Steps:

Noticed water leaking from flower bed near house; low water pressure

Hired plumber to help find leak and diagnosis and suggest repair

Since a lot of digging was to be done; local plumber wanted $2500-3000 so I found a guy that was primarily had crews to dig. The repair was going to be easy..getting to it was the hard part.

Hired local contractor to borrow underneath driveway to find leak

Once leak could not be located decided to install new copper line

Digging continued but new route was established to shorten length under driveway

New Line was installed and connected to city water line

(project was in some rainy winter so this created extra issues)

Recommend Copper - not as prone to breaks like pvc but expensive

Advice:

Do's

If leak is under concrete take your time to get estimates and plan a project that limits damage to concrete. this is very expensive to repair

Do stay on site while contractors working so you can key eye on work and workmanship

Take pictures and video o document for future reference if needed

Make sure all new water line connections include any to your sprinkler system - the forgot and had to come back and tie in. Also be aware they may turn off the main valve to your sprinkler system so remember to turn back on

Don'ts

Try to find a company that has specialized equipment to borrow under concrete. My guy did not and basically dug a major tunnel under my driveway and then repacked after the line was done. I've worried that the ground underneath was not stabilized afterwards. Luckily no problems to date (almost 2 years ago now)

Cleaned out oven

Installed New Baking element - tow prongs and pushed back into wall of oven then replace two hex screws.

Advice:

Do's

Plan to get oven cleaner and clean out oven while your in there
