Kathy Meador Wells on Jun 24, 2015Instead of painting you could have someone cover it with wood planks. Then white wash it for a brighter look.Helpful Reply

Funnygirl on Jun 24, 2015Yes,just paint brick with a primer paint first,"gripper",is a great brand. For the color,I would paint it the same wall color but ask your paint store what they recommend,I'm thinking an enamel would probably hold up the bestHelpful Reply

Connie-Jo Nellis on Jun 24, 2015When I moved into my 1958 built house, the family room/kitchen was paneled and had a red brick fireplace. I didn't want either. I mixed joint compound (used for drywall) into some white semi-gloss latex paint - I don't remember the ratio, good loose brownie texture - and painted the red brick. It worked fabulously!! You could use ANY color paint you'd like, I just wanted white. The joint compound added some filler so the bricks were better covered and the mortar lines slightly less deep. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! I've burned many fires here - easy to clean if necessary and it had held up really well. I'd be leery of facing a fireplace with wood as I'm not sure about fireproofing it.Helpful Reply

Patricia Bechtel Winter on Jun 25, 2015I wouldn't paint the brick - painting takes a no-maintenance surface and makes it high-maintenance. Can you lighten up the walls or even the mantle shelf?Helpful Reply

Connie-Jo Nellis on Jun 25, 2015No maintenance? I painted my brick fireplace almost 20 years ago and have done nothing to it since. Painted well, the maintenance is not a problem.Helpful Reply

Connie Tate on Jul 01, 2015Since you have a western look, I would paint it a color in the tan/beige family. Then remove some of the paint so the brick shows through in random areas. I have seen it done and it is beautiul for a more casual, comfortable feel. Good luck!Helpful Reply
