Doggie yard

I have 2 small dogs and I would like to have them use their own yard to do their business. Any suggestions for making a small poo poo yard.

I used flower boxes to outline a place in the yard for them and to keep my kids out of land mine territory. My mastiff puppy took to the area very quickly and only goes in that area now. The planter boxes make a not so pretty area prettier and help create a border.

Make sure the area is clearly defined...either with the previously mentioned flower boxes, a low, border fence (like the ones at the Dollar Store) and then take the dogs, on a leash, out to the area for their 'job'. If you have already trained them to 'poo' when you ask them to, it will be easier. However, if not, you know when they are likely to poo and take them at that time. Once they start using the area, leave their droppings for a day or so...that will leave the scent in that area. If you don't want to use the leash or you think they have learned to use the area and then you find them using a different area, scoop up the offending pile and put it into the proper area in front of the dog...saying "Poo Here!" and leave that pile until they have done their business the next day. Every dog I ever trained responded to this method. If they are female dogs, that should be all you need to do. However, if one or both are males, you need to make sure there are a few 'upright' places in this area for them to pee on...a PVC pipe stuck in the ground, an old planter, etc. Good luck.

Also, using pea gravel is a GREAT way to define their potty spot. Easy to clean up (poo dosen't get stuck in rocks) and easy to hose down once in a while. Oh, and really easy on their tiny feet!
