Does the value of an antique piece of furniture go down if u paint it?
-
Darla on Jun 25, 2015Most of the time the value goes down if you do anything to the old finish except clean it, especially drastically changing it by painting it. You should only paint the ones that aren't particularly valuable, or in really bad shape. Or if you have no interest in selling it later.Helpful Reply

Shari Allen on Jun 25, 2015Is it a true antique? That would be at least 100 years old. Most vintage furniture isn't worth a lot, so if you would like it better painted, go for it!Helpful Reply

Tracey on Jun 25, 2015How do I find out what my Antiques are worth if I can't find any names/dates, etc., stamped on the bottom of the furniture. I don't even know the names they are considered to be called or what time period they are from? (If you cant already tell, I'm a "Newbee"!) HELPPP!!!!!!!! TraceyHelpful Reply

Kate on Jun 25, 2015Tracey--Why not start a new thread with photos of some of your pieces and give it a title like, :"Help me identify my antiques." There are so many knowledgable and helpful people online. At the very least, you'll get some educated guesses, which will narrow down the time period and give you the search terms to use tor continued research.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Jun 26, 2015Antiques are funny things! A woman on Antiques Roadshow mentioned she wanted to refinish a scruffy looking table but the guy advised her not to touch it...it was worth $100,000! Just know what you have before you even refinish. If valuable, just clean and oil it! There are lots of folks who may be able to help you identify your pieces. If you have any info on where the pieces have traveled (family history) that will help. Certain places in the US (NE for sure) and Canada have some extremely valuable stuff! And many of those families wound up in California where you are!Helpful Reply
