Many, many options... do you want it painted? What type of decor do you already have?
    • Shirley Wheeler Shirley Wheeler on Jun 26, 2015
Thank Angie! Yes, I planned on painting it. My home is traditional furniture some pottery, baskets, seashells, etc.

What are the main colors in the room you want use the piece?
  • Angie Angie on Jun 26, 2015
First thought that came to mind... after a good cleaning, paint the entire piece in the aqua color, let dry completely (best results if overnight). Then paint the entire piece with an antique white, let dry completely, then use sand paper to remove just the white, leaving the aqua intact on some of the edges and where ever else you think you may want the aqua to show through. When finished with the sanding, remove all the dust. Then use a light color wood stain, working in small areas, apply stain then wipe off. When the entire piece has been stained, use a paste wax for wood and apply a generous coat of wax in circular motions ( this will also remove some of the stain). When finished you should have a gorgeous piece. Good luck.

Angie, thank you for your help. I'm so new at all this but love the idea of makeovers. I've seen so many ideas for other pieces. I'm not sure how to transform this dresser into a useful piece for my livingroom yet but will keep looking. :)

Sounds like a coastal theme of sorts, I personally love to paint part of the furniture, then stain the top and drawers, or whatever combo you like. I love the contrast of the painted with the stained.

Before you paint that, look for a maker's label or mark on the inside or out of the piece. Look on all the drawers also. It may be worth more money than you think. That is a mid-century modern Danish piece. Do your homework before you paint it!

Wanda, Thank you for the suggestion to check out the dresser.. It has a stamp on the top inside drawer that say Distinctive Furniture by Stanley. Been looking on Internet but no luck yet. Thanks again!

Yes, certainly check it out first but I like Wendy's idea of leaving the top stained. I never thought of leaving part of the wood unpainted.

Consider decoupage the front of the drawers. Pick a poster or some scrapbooking paper of your choice. Use mod podge Sami gloss finish

I've seen people stencil the drawers and top.

I'm so glad you're going to check it for labels. It's hard to give you idea's without knowing your style. your goal is to get it more common room than bedroom looking. I actually love the technique used on this table by @Saint Rooster http://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/furniture/rose-coffee-table-7741984

Make it a focus point a bright color
  • Carol Carol on Jun 27, 2015
I like the bright color idea but I would try ivory sides and drawers with a coral/orange top and the round legs and maybe the drawer pulls/bar.

This Mid Century Modern dresser has a lot of value in the vintage market - touching the finish would change it's value. why not just sell it and buy one you would like more?

Bobbie Joh, Well I've looked on e-bay and searched the Internet. The stamp in my dresser says Distinctive Furniture by Stanley. Didn't find a dresser like mine. Found longer vanities of course with not prices. Any other suggestions? If it's valuable I would like to try and sell it and put the money in my grandsons college account. My mom would have love that.

Bobbie Joh does have a point. Not a bad idea to research the value in case you change your mind. I can definitely see it in a high gloss lacquer finish though in a modern or contemporary room.

I have never had luck selling these unless they are painted and updated. When I paint these I keep it clean. No distressing no aging any of it. I can also see a big zig zag pattern or asymmetrical pattern. These are beautiful updated.

    Hey Shirley

Have you ever deco podge or modge podge a dresser

I paint it a solid color then print something off and mod podge it on front of the dresser

Or paint one solid color to match your comforter or decor and paint drawers one solid color ti match it all and pull it together
