Has anyone ever re-covered boxed springs or a mattress?

Had a practically new bed set in a storage unit that had a leak we knew nothing about. By the time we discovered it there were BIG water marks on both pieces. I paid good for the set and don't want to discard them. I thought about buying covers but seeing that when they are on a bed would bother me.

You could try using the hand held attachment on a carpet cleaner you'd use to clean upholstery with. After it's cleaned, apply a thick layer of baking soda over the wet area. This helps draw out the moisture, and when it's dried, you just vacuum everything up. I refer to Pinterest all the time for help and ideas and it would probably have quite a few ideas on this subject. Good luck!

As long as they are clean, it doesn't really matter - except as an irritation. Just go ahead with your idea of mattress covers - they look like bed linens.

@Marion Nesbitt Thanks, I do want to be frugal but I want it to be a good fit too.

Pinterest shows some pretty ways to cover a box spring. I have an easier fix. My daughter spilled nail polish remover down the side of her bed. After airing it out, it left an ugly stain. I just got an extra fitted sheet and put it over the box spring. Pull it snug--you could even staple it underneath to make it snug. There is already a mattress cover and sheet on the mattress, so it looks nice too.

@Linda Hey1 I like this idea. Cheaper that reupholstering huh?

If place leaked and your stuff then got wet and mold will be growing. So the best is to cover and maybe recover to keep mode away from you. Also you might contact a company that cleans rug and see if they can help. There also are places that might be able to rodo for you check Goolge for someone in your area.

@Wanda.ll This is true and a real concern but both pieces are dry, just need to look nicer

I would remove the old fabric and wash and dry it. If you don't want to re- use it then just staple a fitted sheet and/or matrerss cover to the frame

@Anita Gian I thought about that. I have a staple gun. It might work

If they smell like mildew, you can spray with vodka and that will remove the smell/ I also would not remove the cover but cover with fitted sheets and then put a plastic cover them.

@Nancy minshew Thanks Nancy but I have already did just what you recommended I "don't" do. Last night we actually re-covered the box spring with an inexpensive piece of quilted sateen fabric. I was able to keep the existing cotton batting. I probably could have done it alone if I had not needed someone to hold the fabric as I stapled. It looks brand new. As for the mattress. I only have to do the top and sides, the cotton is dry and scented with downy. I have enough fabric to do it and make them match. Only out of $13 for the fabric.

When our storage leaked and had family visiting. I used mildew remover spray, sun/air dried it and I just use the fancy sheet n staple method.. Worked perfect!!!

Peroxide will take out stains and smells. Just spray it on.
