Salvaged Living: Decorating & DIY on Jun 29, 2015I agree - chalkpaint means no primer needed. You can buy premade or make your own (I make my own, much less expensive)! Just so you know there is also a touch of curing time after you paint. It dries quickly, but over the next few weeks it becomes more resilient and resistant to water stains/chipping/and the like! I always like to finish off a piece with wax. (I use Annie Sloan only because it is all I have tried for wax - there are lots out there to choose from) It takes it from "looks like I painted this myself" to "professional" looking. Hope you enjoy your new project!Helpful Reply

B. Enne on Jun 30, 2015I'm not a primer fan, but sometimes you just ''gotta'' do it :) So yes, if you are using regular paint. You went to the trouble of removing the finish, so don't skimp now.Helpful Reply

Onemomofboys on Jun 30, 2015Definitly prime. Bare wood will suck up all your paint. I am not a fan of paint and primer but it saves time. You may need a few extra coats in my opinion.... good luck!Helpful Reply

Follow your H on Jun 30, 2015In my experience, chalk paint needs no primer ONLY if you don't sand it to bare wood. The best thing for knot coverage and to seal the wood is shellac. You can then put anything over it.Helpful Reply
