Need ideas for a heavy metal lock box with a broken lock. It's 13' x 8" x 5". Light grey color with black handle. I would hate to throw it away. It would cost to much to get a new lock.

@Rose Marie I found this with my mother's things after she passed away. I didn't have a key for it so I had to take it to a lock smith to open it. A new key would cost $20 and I don't think it's worth it. I could probably buy a new box. It is a nice box though.

You could turn it into a plant pot. Punch a few small holed into the bottom with a hammer and nail. Option to paint/decoration the outside. Put in some rocks on the bottom then soil. And add greenery or flowers. And keep it on your patio. Or indoor, but then put a plate or something under it for the drain holes.

You can turn it into a First Aid box. Get some red vinyl letters or a stencil and red paint. Put the words FIRST AID on it. Fill it with supplies and keep it in the bathroom, you car or anywhere you might need one. If it's too heavy for that, make it look like a mini vintage suitcase and use it for a door stop. Paint it or just add 2 thin black leather straps on each side of the handle. Add a few "travel decals" printed from your computer.

This would be great in a guest room on a little table. Put a mirror with decorative $ store frame and put in lid. Put dividers in bottom for guest to put personal stuff. You can get these dividers that clip together and are different sizes or mactac the bottom with sea shell print or something to brighten it up or decoupage the whole thing to match decor.

Line it with velvet or even felt and use it for jewelry. You could even glue cork to the lid to stick earrings or glue a mirror in the lid.

You could cut a hole in your closet floor and sink it in the hole and cover with carpet and still use it as a safe box, just attach a stick on velcro strap to keep it closed.

Looks like the lock is there, maybe you only need a key? I have one just like that but its pink metal, very heavy, no key. Haven't gotten to locksmith yet to replace missing key so I use a bobby pin! Btw, have replaced similar locks for cheap at locksmith shop. I don't need another safe box, but can't throw this away and have no idea what else to do with it either! It's soooo heavy.

Spray paint it in a color matching your bedroom design. Drill the necessary holes to hang it on the wall near the bed and then attach it there with the top hanging downward so it opens and closes bottom to top. Then, store your TV changer, etc., in it. You could leave it with the industrial look or glue some old jewelry pieces on, or add a dollar store mirror on the outside.

Another idea is to spray paint it and hang it on the wall in the kitchen by the basement door, garage door or backdoor. Glue an old screwdriver that has been shined up to the front and store some of those little hand tools we always seem to need close at hand.

Make a charger station out of it. You can still spray paint it or leave it as is. But, you'll need an/some holes in the back to thread the cords through.

try Rockler hardware catalogue for a replacement lock or eBay. Hang it in a closet or cabinet or in the floor or under the bed for a safe place to store important papers, insurance policy, birth and marriage certificates, deeds, car Titles etc. Make it easy to grab along with your picture albums or a thumb drive loaded with favorite photos that can be placed in the box with the important papers.

Break off the lid and handle, paint it, (maybe add a shelf), and use it as a shadow box. You could also hot glue shells, pearls, and mod podge sand on to it for a beach look.

Well, in 2020, you might be able to use it to store keys, to prevent them from being scanned by car thieves while inside the house, and being duplicated. How to test to see if it works... i dunno. You might see if a cell phone works in there, or a wireless router or hotspot... if it doesn't emit a signal, then you might be good? I want to try it for that and am looking for how to convert the box into something that doesn't look like a safe. Probably I will have a sibling paint it all crafty like, or something.

Sorry for opening an old thread btw, but google image search brought me here down the old garden path. :)

    Hi,

If you can still secure it but not lock it, use as a box without a key lock, Anything from storing Keys, Fuses, Matches, Candles, Batteries etc.
