Painting kitchen cabinets, not all parts are actual wood!

Quick question for you: My husband and I are buying a home that needs a lot of updating. Eventually, I would like to remodel the kitchen, but for now, I'd like to just paint the existing cabinets. The door and drawer fronts are wood, but the body of the cabinets are not, they seem to be some sort of MDF with a veneer overlay. How do I paint the whole cabinet? Thanks in advance!

First, clean them off really well so there's no grease or soap on them, sand lightly, prime with a shellac-based primer, then paint. I would suggest eggshell, satin or glossy paint because flat paint's not very washable.

What is the process to paint kitchen cabinets that are not all wood?

Sand lightly and use a very good primer. I just painted my cabinets using Benjamin Moore primer and Advance paint. I can't say enough how great that paint and primer is. First time I ever used BJ paint. Pricey, but definitely worth it. Must buy from a BJ dealer though. Anything sold in another store just isn't the same.

Yes! Clean them off with a product called TSP found in the paint section of your home improvement store. Cleaning is a step that causes the most pain if you skip it because grease from the stove or from hands that open the cabinets causes even primer not to stick. It won't take major sanding to get the primer to stick. Make sure you have de-slicked the shiny coating and then clean the dust off before getting started.

@Beja Foster Beja is right. Make sure you thoroughly clean with TSP. Then use a liquid deglosser. If you use a good coat of deglosser, you probably don't need to sand if the finish is in good shape. Use the best primer & paint that you can afford. The prep is everything.
