If it is subfloor underneath the carpet and cannot afford new then clean the subfloor. I had plywood subfloors in a tiny kitchen and could not afford a floor at the moment. I used Behr porch and patio slate gray. It came out beautiful and I used one coat of poly. I did this to add extra durability as I have 2 dogs and a cat.

If it's concrete, use a concrete/masonary paint. Then a concrete/masonary sealer/clear coat. If it's subfloor, clean it well and sand if necessary. You can use any type paint; flat, eggshell, semi and so on. It really depends on what your final finish preference is. If you need pics of the paints available, I can shoot you some as I just finished a similar project!

According to the manufacturer, the epoxy part is to be used only for outdoor spaces. I have 3 dogs over 60 lbs. it has held remarkably well.

When you pull up the carpet, sweep it and if you see any kind of shine on the floor, it will probably need some sanding. We went way overboard by sanding all the poly off the floor. That isn't really needed, you just need to 'scuff' it up a bit so the paint will stick to the floor-paint has a hard time sticking to polyurethane. We used Glidden Porch & Floor paint (it was cheaper than Behr). Easy to apply with a paint roller and a extension pole-like painting with a mop. You can use poly on top of the paint as Michelle said. The paint comes in several finishes (low-lustre, gloss, satin) We used satin, waxed it and it has held up for 9 months even with 3 cats and 2 dogs.

I have used that Behr porch/patio paint - it's terrific. Lasted for YEARS! In fact, sold the house and they still have it on their porch.

I wouldn't paint them if they are true hardwood floors

@Loralei Fox I absolutely agree ~ true hardwood floors are beautiful and I would do anything to preserve them. Painting them would be criminal. I saw someone take and put astroturf on an antique trunk and put it outside in the sun. That made me cringe.

Don't paint an actual hardwood floor. Once you do the paint will get between the boards and then there is no way to get it back out again.

If you're just painting plywood under carpet kilz it first then the higher gloss you use the easier it will be to clean. Just remember oil can't go over water, which means kilz is oil based (which will block stains and odor) and water based (latex) paint can go over it, oil based paint will have a harder finish when dry and cured, just double mess with 2 oil base jobs. I hope this helps.

I used Kiltz last week. It was awful. It used to be the best.its like applying white water.

We recently pulled up what had to be 50 year old carpeting and all the stains one might expect were there. We thought the stains would be awful and planned on a dark stain to hide them. However a lovely surprise - when sanded the stains were more like an "aged" look and my husband was able to do a more medium toned look. So, fear not! You may be quite surprised. Worst case scenario? Paint! Not that big a deal.
