Painting laminate counter tops

When painting counter tops do I need the special counter top paint kit or can I sand, prime, paint? Anyone have experience?

I bought the Rustoleum countertop paint that's tintable. My counters looked fine when I was done but they haven't held up, It soaks ups spills and leaves stains and it nicks very easy. I only has a few spots completely come loose. Unless you use a dark color and are very careful I don't recommend the Rustoleum. What ever you choose just make sure to sand and clean properly or nothing will stick.
  • I painted mine about 6 months ago with latex paint, first I sanded all of my counter tops, then I cleaned them good with soap and water and let them dry, then I applied a coat of primer, after that dried I put a coat of latex paint on them (any color that you like) then with a sea sponge I dabbed on 2 more colors to make it look like marble when that dried I put 3 coats of the poly acrylic, sanding lightly between coats, so far its holding up good, when I clean them I just use a little dish detergent and water. Good Luck..

Great info ..... I have a huge to do list for my kitchen but brand new counters would destroy the budget. Was wondering about the kit vs Pinterest DIY solutions. What I would really love is to actually see and touch these counters. Anyone close to Houston want to let me into their kitchen?

I did mine, just cleaned, primed and painted then finished. Piece of cake. Made mine look like tiles, lots of compliments!

@Janie I'm sorry, I wish I could, but that has since been replaced w/granite. If I find pics, I will send them. Just do what you want, everything is replaceable. Have you seen the wonderful concrete finishes on this site. I would totally have done that, had I known. Good luck!!

I cleaned, lightly sanded, and painted my white formica with gold specks with Hammerlite. In retrospect, I would have used the gray instead of black. It comes in brown too. It has held up like stone for years, with normal use, using cutting boards and trivets.

@She I couldn't find "Hammerlite". I did find a Rust-Oleum spray paint - forged Hammered. It comes in all different metal colors. could this be it?
