I would start with a citric acid and water soak. Or a mild bleach if there isn't colored threads. I believe you can get citric acid where you buy canning supplies. Leave it overnight, then wash as usual. Good luck!

If they are light coloured you can soak them in water, Resolve powder or Oxiclean and a bit of mild detergent. Add a little vinegar to the rinse. I soak my mildewy smelling clothes (after storing in basement) in water, vinegar (about 1 cup if it is bad, in the washer) and detergent. It always works. Hotter water works better, but if you have to use cold, at least use luke warm, and soak longer. As well, dry in the dryer or sunshine. I personally wouldn't use bleach. I just donated 2 sheets sets that yellowed due to bleach.

Bleach if it's white or you don't care if it becomes white; also try soaking in non-sudsy ammonia.

I would try Tide Acti-lift pods. I swear by them. Use two pods and soak over night. You can add a little GAIN for extra freshening but the pods alone do the real work. Those little guys brighten colors and whiten whites. The smell is fresh and the soak should kill the mildew.Bleach can damage linens - if that it what your trying to clean. AND If you can hang them outside over night- something about the night air freshen like nothing I have ever seen before.

@Linda Hanson Thanks, sounds good. I never used liquid bleach but I did use a laundry booster with bleach...didn't work.

if that doesn't work I remember once having mold on some wet clothes my kids tossed into the hamper the morning we went on vacation and when we came back you could smell the mold when you opened the door! My mom recommended a paste of lemon juice and salt - rubbed into the mouldy parts and then left out in direct sunlight. I had to do this a few times -maybe 3 or 4- and waiting for half a day to rewash then and apply it again killed me but it was worth it. This was way before Tide laundry pods though. Old cure but it did work.!
