Easy-To-Make Succulent Greenroof Birdhouses! Don't have a lot of carpentry tools or skills? This is the project for you! No building required!
Succulent Greenroof Birdhouse
I wanted to try some Greenroof Birdhouses in our garden but the average price of $50 each (without plants!) was slowing me down. So, I came up with a way to make two for less than $20! Yes, less than $10 each!
Unfinished pine birdhouses
Starting out with two unfinished pine birdhouses, I added some wide reclaimed molding pieces that I cut to fit each side and nailed on. Next, I painted the birdhouses with leftover exterior paint and lined the tops with burlap.

Then I used four small pots of Sedum and Hens and Chicks and scooped up some Creeping Jenny from our garden to plant the tops of the two Greenroof Birdhouses. Add soil, then plan your planting by laying it out in place first.

Plant and water! How simple was that? And, you have Greenroof Birdhouses as pretty as any you can buy at the nurseries for a fraction of the cost! They should last a few seasons and the birds and I will enjoy them.

Did you line your roof with some plastic before adding your soil to keep your birdhouse roof from rotting? I love these and am going to make some myself to use as centerpieces on our outdoor patio furniture. I think I will line my birdhouse roofs with a piece of heavy duty tarp material from some torn tarps we have lying around and I think I will also add a small piece of hardware cloth (which is not cloth at all but wire in a small square pattern) on top of my soil to give my hens and chickens roots something to hold onto and hopefully keep my soil from washing away during rain showers. If I have any wire showing I can always just add a little bit of moss to hide it. Thanks for sharing your beautiful living birdhouses.
