Is this a weed?
-
Cheryl on Jul 22, 2015I can't identify it, but if it just appeared and grows very fast, it probably is. It doesn't look like any weeds I've seen before or in my "weed book". If those flowers are part of it, it's a nice looking "weed". If you like it, you might keep it awhile and see what it does. I'd cut it back a little so it will be "bushier" (cut stems just above a set of leaves). Hoping that someone else can ID it for you. I have a beautiful, non-flowering shrub my neighbor called a weed when it appeared. It grows fast for a shrub, but the leaves are a beautiful light greenish yellow and, with my cutting and shearing it back, it has turned into a lovely focal point against the regular garden green.Helpful Reply

GranArt on Jul 23, 2015thank you Cheryl. No the small orange flowering plant is not apart of it. And it did not seem to grow fast at all. That little garden is mostly clay and some potting soil worked in and over the years I've thrown seed out there many times in hopes something would grow well in that 1/2 shaded area. The best I've seen grow there in the past is good old house plants. I shall wait and see. Thanks for the response.Helpful Reply

Carol Claremont on Jul 23, 2015It is a weed - this year is the first year I remember seeing it and it first I thought it might be some Salvia, which has similar leaves and grows tall but it is a weed so get it out of there. It should come up very easily.Helpful Reply

Cheryl on Jul 23, 2015I think they are right, it looks like the 2nd kind on this page: http://www.foragingtexas.com/2006/08/smartweed.html Usually an aquatic plant, seems it can grow if the soil is moist enough - and clay holds water very well. I'd pull it soon before it becomes a thicket. Don't let it flower and set seed!Helpful Reply

DORLIS on Jul 23, 2015It can take over, but I like the pink flowers so I leave it, cut off the seeds before they can make new plants and when it gets too invasive, I pull the unwanted plants.Helpful Reply
