I would avoid anything that would scratch or etch the porcelain, like a pumice stone. You could use Easy off oven cleaner, the blue label, no fumes. Empty the bowl and spray it on.
C-L-R works well. It is a clear liquid similar in looks to water and available at most any store that sells cleaning products. I use it to remove the hard water ring. Turn the water off to the toilet, flush, and tear a paper towel into long narrow strips, soak in C-L-R and apply the strips to the ring. Let soak for as long as feasible. Remove and scrub the ring with a toilet brush, turn the water to the toilet back on and flush.
Keep pouring Viacal on it and leave. don't flush unless really necessary. It will then be disolved gradually.
