The rust usually appears when the silver plate has worn thin. the best way to remove the rust is silver polish. To keep the rust away, always dry your silverware, the rust comes from water left to rust the base metal of your silverware. It takes a few extra seconds to dry, but it will be worth it in the long run. good luck
