...then I ran the dishwasher. The dirty water backed up into the freshly cleaned sinks. Any suggestions on what to do next, shy of calling a plumber (I'm on a low fixed income) ?????

Use some heavy-duty drain cleaner on the kitchen drain - that might fix it.

you could put a hose in the drain and pack some cloths around it then turn the water on and the pressure of the water may clean the drain out Be sure and put the hose way down in the drain Since you probably won't be able to run it from the sink take the p trap off again and run it from there Might want to have help so they can turn the water off if necessary

This has happened to us in the past. If you have two people and access to a garden hose.... We ran the garden hose through the kitchen window, I used a dish towel to plug one side of the sink drain really tight and put the garden hose in the other side with a towel around it tight so the water had to go down the drain. Then while I held the towels tightly in place someone else turned on the garden hose, that was enough pressure to push out the plugged area. Bare in mind that if it doesn't work, the garden hose attendant needs to turn the water off quickly or you will have a watery mess on your hands. ***That being said, I would not try this if you have already put chemicals down your drain it could be VERY DANGEROUS if the chemicals splash up on you.

Try some baking soda and vinegar,if you have no drain cleaner on hand. It works surprisingly well!
