I started ripping up the rug and where the step risers are pine I found this material in the riser of each pie shaped landing. Does anyone know what it is? I wanted to stain or paint the stairs to avoid rug altogether. Suggestions?

From the pictures, it appears to be some sort of concrete Ezna.

@You're welcome Enza. Concrete is stainable too. Of course it won't look like wood, but it's a thought. You'd have to seal the cracks first.

Hard to tell exactly but it might be luan board.. A very thin sort of "filler" covering used to even out floors or possibly in this case to fill in the triangle shape instead of plywood.

Thank you ! I'll look into that. I guess my only recourse is to carpet the area once again or get a replacement riser.

I think it is simply residue of concrete that has smudged onti the stair.

Buy a thin wood material or whatever you want to use so you can stain it. 1/4 inch wood will not cost as much as new risers and you could stain that.

you could always use wood laminate to cover it

    It is a floor leveler.

Thank you so much all! I was beside myself thinking how I could either remove it or place something on top that I could stain. I appreciate all your input

It looks like they used Patch and Level or something like it. It's a product that is used to level out uneven floor or to fill gaps in the flooring. The product is something like drywall putty. It looks like they must have shampooed the carpet or it got wet later down the line. The problem is what is underneath it. If they used it fill and level out an uneven area above particle board or plywood, you would have to remove and replace it, making sure when you do replace it it is level when installed.

Thanks a lot Jill. Finding out what it is is half the battle

be mindful that when you change the rise of one or more stairs and not the others that you may create a trip hazard. we develop muscle memory (that's how we can go up and down stairs without looking, we know how high to step). If that changes from one stair to the next it can be a problem.

Thank you ! I read that elsewhere. Whatever I decide to place there will be kept thin

I'd wet it down and try to get it off. Nothing wrong with a crack showing between boards on the pie shaped treads. My stairs were worse. Several layers of paint, then glued down carpet. It was especially bad on the pie-shaped pieces. Have them to the point where I can now stain - the dark stain covers the reddish residual stain from the first paint coat. Yeah!
