Stairway door

My upstairs door blocks natural light from a window that is at the top of the stairs. I can not remove the door because of heating/cooling issues. I would love to put a door in that has 12-15 lights. Because it is at the bottom of the stairs, safety is an issue. I was wondering if I had the inside covered with plexi glass would that pass code?

I should think tempered would be adequate, but I'm not a building inspector. ;) You should check with your city if you're concerned about code. Not all are the same.

You could replace the door with one that has glass panels in it. If you are afraid of the glass breaking/safety issues, the entire glass area could be covered with plexi-glass and framed out.

@rose, code is different everywhere. You best bet it to call your local building inspectors office. If they are anything like ours, they'll be more than happy to help you so you. Clerks are HoDe or L's might know the local codes too.
