The Redesign Habit on Aug 27, 2015What if you whitewash the cabinet (the grain will still show) and then wax it. Put a beautiful wood top or butcher block top and some simple wooden draw and door pulls to tie the whole piece together.Helpful Reply

Barbara Butters on Aug 28, 2015Another thought , how about an outrageous colour ?bright turquoise , mauve , purple , yellow or my all time favourite a deep Chinese red . It would be a " blue -red " . Your top could be butcher block or I have seen some that are wood planking , with varathaned finish .Helpful Reply

John Biermacher on Aug 28, 2015I hope I can attach a photo. I have had very good luck with dry brushing spray paint. I start with a base coat of red primer (Rustoleum painter's touch). Sand and touch up. If you want a monochromatic look, the top coat with a wipe on urethane. If not then lightly dust the red with satin canyon black and dry brush to get the effect/color/highlights you want. Pretty forgiving- if it gets too dark dust and dry brush with the red primer. Whenever I spray a project I top coat with a wipe on urethane to even out shiny/dull spots. I like the combination with a wood top and especially reclaimed barnwood. Tips for that would require another lengthy post.Helpful Reply

Cheryle Fuller on Aug 28, 2015That looks wonderful John Biermacher. If you don't want to use butcher block, you may want to switch to a metal. i woud like to try either a stainless steel or copper on top of plywood on my cabinets flanking my stove. You can also use galvanized flashing to make a top. The copper and stainess steel can be order in sheets online. You might be able to get someone who works with metal such as an Air conditioning company to use a break to make the turn under the top, then tap in small nails to secure it.Helpful Reply
